We’re on our way with the creation of the Poetry Podcasts. Everyone seems very excited about getting these done. It’s inspiring to hear all the amazing talent we have in the class. The poems are great and when you add music to them…Oh my! There are some geat poets out there. I’m having a lot of fun working on these Podcasts and I think the students are too. I’ve decided that I will make it part of our program next year, just like the Ability Online Blogs are for the students this year.

I’m very excited. Last Friday we started our Poetry Unit and we did it using Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song”. Bob Marley is nothing short of a prophet and his lyrics and music are powerfully brilliant. The students seemed to really be inspired by reading his lyrics and discussing the meaning behind the words. I’m happy that we started in such positive way. The song itself was also a really good way to transition from our 4-month-long look at African Heritage to the new poetry unit. If you take the time to listen to what Bob Marley sings about in “Redemption Song” it will explain why.
I’ve been wanting to try Podcasting with the students for a while. This may be the perfect oportunity. We’ve been discussing recording some of the poems at the end of the unit and turing them into podcasts, with music in the background and everything! I can’t wait.
This upcoming Friday, we are having a “Poetry Cafe” where we will be reading and discussing all kinds of poems. We will be reading poems from Tupac Shakur, Langston Hughes, Alden Nolen, Jack Prelutsky and others. …hmm…who’s bringing the coffee? Maybe if everyone’s good, I’ll bring in some treats….a little jazz….a little hot chocolate…but I’ll keep it a surprise…shhhhh….
