On Teaching Students to Solve Algebraic Expressions Using a Star Wars Analogy

Growing up I wasn’t very good at math.  It’s a cliche for sure, and many of us say it, but for me it was oh so true.  Imagine, then, how I felt when I found out that my first full year of teaching required me to teach a Grade 8 math class.  And not just any old Grade 8 math class, oh no, it happened to be the “smart class”, where every child seemed to be uber-brilliant and years beyond thier grade level. 

There were countless sleepless nights in the week before classes started after the summer break.  I was quite nervous about teaching something both new and that I wasn’t ever really good at.
