On Teaching Special Ed
I often get asked by those who don’t work with special needs students (or think they don’t) and those who don’t teach period that it must be hard teach these students or that it takes a very special kind of person to work with these students. I don’t know, really. All I do know is that I very much enjoy it and get a lot out of it.
I tell people that if you want a truely authentic teacher experience, if you want to experience success in its purest form, then working with these students definitely is the way to go. It is not that these students are any less intellegent or lack abilities that non-exceptional students have, but they often have to work harder to get to the same place. Together, we work to find how each and every student learns best and then work on getting that student to advocate for themselves. As spec ed teachers, we must remember that we are teaching the student NOT the exceptionality.
Hard work? At times. Rewarding? Definitely.
